YEAR 2 - Ashford & Aston

Hello Year 2 and welcome to our year group! We have already shared some amazing learning together and had some fantastic experiences in the first half of the year. We cannot wait to continue with even more great learning – here is what we will be doing in Summer 1!

Mrs Talbot, Mrs Rose and Mrs Maddison

What We're Learning This Half Term

Mathematics: exploring measurements and fractions

Our maths focus in Summer 1 will begin by exploring different types of measure. We will especially be looking at different units of measure used for mass and capacity. When we move onto learning about fractions we will be concentrating on being able to recognise, find, name and write the fractions 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and ¾ of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity.

English: The Day War Came / The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch

In English we are going to be reading The Day War Came which will lend itself nicely to writing diary entries from the point of view of a refugee who is seeking safety from the war. After this, we will be looking at The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch which will help to inspire us write some descriptive character profiles. We will also be linking this story to our history focus of Grace Darling and the RNLI and how the RNLI originated and what work they do today,

Science: Animals including Humans / Plants

We will be starting the summer term by completing our previous science topic based on animals and humans. This time, we will be looking at how food and nutrition is an important aspect of our development. We will also find out about how to keep ourselves healthy by introducing some elements of personal hygiene. In the second half of the half term, we will move on to our final science topic of the year – plants. We will be learning how to recognise different types of plants as well as being able to group different plants based on different criteria and characteristics.

Curriculum Focus: History – Grace Darling and the RNL

In our history lessons we will be learning all about Grace Darling, who was considered to be a real heroine of her time. She broke the mould and went against people’s expectations and so we will be looking at her actions and why they were so significant. We will look at how her life links to the modern day RNLI and how she may have helped to shape today’s society as we know it.

PE: Team Building / Healthy Lifestyles

After the Easter holidays, we will be looking at developing our sportsmanship in a range of different team building skills which will help to improve our communication skills in a variety of ways. We will also be looking at why healthy lifestyles are important and what we can do in order to keep ourselves fit and healthy.

RE/PSHE: Easter story / The world of drugs

Following on from the Easter celebrations, we will be looking at why Christians mark the Easter period and looking at stories from the bible that link to this important aspect of Christian worship. Once we have looked at this, we will be moving on to our PSHE topic – The World of Drugs. This area of learning is going to help us recognise what medicines are and how they are used to help us, as well as discuss what is safe and unsafe for us to use.

Creative Arts: Seaside landscapes

In Art we are going to be looking at creating seaside landscapes and will be learning how to use paints in different ways to help us create pieces of art that are inspired by William M Chase. In DT, we will be moving on to our food topic where we will be learning how to prepare food based on tomatoes which we will be growing ourselves in school.
